How Often Should I Receive Reiki?

There is benefit to receive Reiki regularly – distance or in-person Reiki – and I do think for practitioners, having a daily self-practice is important, even though practitioners have the gift of receiving Reiki as we share it. Everyone can learn Reiki for self-practice. However, not everyone aspires to become a practitioner, so what is a reasonable number of sessions to experience the results you desire?

This question of ‘how often should I receive Reiki?’ is a good one to ask before or at an initial Reiki session: it can provide some insight to the practitioner’s approach and views on Reiki. The answer you receive can help in your personal assessment for how Reiki and the practitioner resonate with you.

To answer the question, the practitioner will ask you why you are coming in for Reiki and what your intentions may be for your session. On the topic of how many sessions to receive, it is usually helpful for the practitioner to understand the symptoms you are interested in addressing and if there is a chronic health condition, as well as if you are receiving ongoing care in some manner – traditional or holistic. Treating cancer in the body or receiving psychotherapy are two examples where Reiki is an excellent complement in your healing plan and where there has been some research in the recent decades (see my Reiki Resources page to explore more on this topic). If there is a broken bone or bones that need healing, I recommend contacting your practitioner first to discuss right timing for Reiki.

For chronic conditions and for regular health wellness and spiritual practice, I encourage clients to consider a consistent recurring practice – with the caveat that they follow their inner guidance for when the timing feels right. This could be around the timing of medical appointments or therapy treatments.

Timing for sessions could be weekly, every other week or monthly. The frequency depends on your goals as stated above. It is also as a result of your having a few sessions and seeing how you are feeling in relation to your goal(s) which you can assess with the feedback of your Reiki practitioner and other medical or health professionals you may be working with.

Some enjoy coming for Reiki sessions when they feel that ‘tug’ for Reiki. I encourage clients to trust that tug which could also be referred to as gut feeling, inner guidance or intuition. Allowing yourself to listen to that part of you is welcomed and encouraged with Reiki healing. Remember Reiki is a natural healing system that supports all parts of being human: our body, mind, emotions and spirit.

Budgeting the cost is a factor impacting frequency of sessions. Some practitioners offer a membership option or you may find Reiki discounts or special offers.
