The word Reiki (pronounced ‘ray – key’) largely translates from Japanese to English to mean ‘universal lifeforce energy’ or a spiritual consciousness that animates all things.
From this perspective, lifeforce energy flows within and all around us in our non-subtle or physical body – cells, solid tissues, blood, bodily fluids & organs – as well as through our subtle body or the parts of us that can’t be visibly seen. Reiki is also a natural system of healing, where a practitioner learns how to contribute to the experience of supporting movement of energy in a session. These perspectives of the human body or life from the lens of energy are explained in countless ways, with origins in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Vedic systems of Aruveyda and Yoga and many other traditions over the centuries. In the 1990’s modern medicine created the term Biofield Science. Many Reiki healing system styles incorporate interpretations or explanations about Reiki using these origin sources. One research study identified over 300 styles of Reiki, and millions of Reiki practitioners across the globe. Some who train in Reiki offer it formally from their homes or offices or inconjunction with their professions. Some who train learn to offer Reiki to themselves and loved ones.
Lifeforce energy can become disrupted or blocked when we absorb or accept – consciously or unconsciously – negative thoughts and feelings. The result is toxins in the body, and cells to aggregate in a particular area of the body causing illness or stress in any number of combined ways, physically, mentally, emotionally, etc. If we agree we live in a world made up of a lifeforce energy, we are all a part of this life experience, constantly influencing each other’s energy. Coming for a Reiki session is one way to help energy move through, to flow freely and to contribute to our goals for well-being. Learning Reiki is a means to support oneself and others at will in the movement of energy.
The natural healing system of Reiki is not religious, though Reiki is a spiritual practice for many Reiki practitioners who practice Reiki daily: Reiki invites continual awareness for the connection with lifeforce, with a consciousness of connection for all living things. Mikao Usui was a Buddhist who it is said discovered Reiki during a deep meditation experience. He is recognized as the founder of Reiki most commonly practiced. Reiki practitioners may have a meditation practice that is utilized from their Reiki training, or in conjunction with some meditation practices they’ve learned elsewhere.
